PILAC Summer 2017 Internship - Call for Applications
**Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.**
The Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (PILAC) is seeking to hire a full-time summer 2017 intern. Exposed to some of the foremost challenges in the changing contemporary strategic environment, the PILAC summer intern will gain valuable experience performing high-level international-law and policy research. Only current HLS students are eligible to apply.
About the Program
PILAC’s objective is to explore and understand contemporary challenges concerning armed conflict through the lens of international law. Its mode is critical, independent, and rigorous. Its methodology fuses traditional public international law research with targeted analysis on changing security environments. The Program does not engage in advocacy. While its contributors may express a range of views on contentious legal and policy debates, PILAC does not take institutional positions on these matters.
Projects
The summer intern will likely work on a range of projects, such as war-algorithm accountability, extraterritorial use of lethal force, and medical care in armed conflict.
Time Commitment
- This PILAC summer internship is full-time (35 hours per week) for 10 to 12 weeks.
- The summer internship will run for 10 to 12 weeks beginning in mid-May to early June (to be agreed with PILAC).
Eligibility
- The Internship is open only to current Harvard Law School students who, by the time of the internship, will have successfully completed at least one international law course.
- Students at different levels of study may apply.
- The summer intern must be available to begin working sometime between mid-May and early June 2017.
Selectivity
- We anticipate receiving a large number of applications, and, unfortunately, we can likely hire only one intern or two interns.
- We thus strongly recommend that interested candidates explore and pursue as many possible opportunities in the area of international law and armed conflict as feasible.
Payment
- The PILAC summer intern will be paid $15 an hour.
- Please note that the remuneration may not be sufficient to cover living expenses in the Boston/Cambridge area.
- No other benefits are provided, and therefore interns must, for instance, make their own housing, insurance, and transportation arrangements.
- The intern will need to provide his or her own computer.
Commitment to Diversity
- We actively seek and welcome applications from people of color, women, the LGBTQIA community, people with military experience, and persons with disabilities, as well as applications from students across the spectrum of training in international law related to armed conflict.
To Apply
- While there is no application deadline, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
- All application materials must be sent in a single e-mail to pilac@law.harvard.edu with the subject line: "Summer 2017 HLS PILAC Internship Application [Name of Applicant]."
- Each application must include the following four materials:
- An up-to-date résumé;
- An e-mail message explaining your interest in the internship and your experience in international-law research;
- Contact information of three references, including at least one who can speak to your knowledge of international law; and
