About the speaker
Professor Mike Schmitt is Professor of International Law at the University of Reading, the Charles H. Stockton Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence at the US Naval War College, the G. Lieber Norman Lieber Distinguished Scholar at West Point, and a Senior Fellow at the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence. He has previously been on the faculty of Durham University and the University of Exeter in the UK and was Dean of the Marshall Center for Security Studies in Germany. The General Editor of the Lieber Studies (CUP) and Executive Editor of International Law Studies, Professor Schmitt is a retired Air Force judge advocate, including tours as Staff Judge Advocate for Operations Provide Comfort and Northern Watch. Before attending law school, he served as an intelligence officer, specializing in nuclear and tactical targeting.
The author of over 160 scholarly publications, Professor Schmitt is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and a member of the Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on International Law. In 2017, he was awarded the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana by the President of Estonia for his work in promoting cyber defence.
About the series
The HLS PILAC series on careers in public international law, scheduled for Spring of 2021, is intended to showcase current and former practitioners in the field of public international law. Invited speakers will take part in an informal interview with HLS PILAC faculty or staff. Current HLS students will also be invited to ask questions pertaining to the speaker’s career or current work at the end of the discussion. The events will be scheduled for 60 minutes and will be conducted via Zoom’s video meeting system. The events will not be recorded. The events in this series are open only to current Harvard Law School students and staff.
