Speaker biography

Prof. Daniel Statman is head of the philosophy department at the University of Haifa and chair of the Israeli Philosophical Association. His areas of specialization are ethics, political philosophy, moral psychology, and Jewish philosophy. In recent years, he has been working on the ethics of war and is currently co-authoring a book in this area titled War by Agreement that defends a contractarian understanding of just war theory. He has also worked in the field of state and religion and his co-authored book, State and Religion in Israel, will be published by Cambridge in late 2018. In addition to his activities in the academic field, Prof. Statman has served on several public committees, including the committee that revised the ethical code for the IDF and the committee that reviews requests for exemption from army service on grounds of conscience.
