Ben Hines is an LL.M. student at Harvard Law School, and has been a Research Assistant for the HLS Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (PILAC) since September 2025. Ben’s research at PILAC focuses on the continuous co-application of the jus ad bellum and the jus in bello, as well as the role of civilian harm in proportionality calculus.

Ben is an editor of the Harvard International Law Journal and a student attorney in the Harvard Law School Election Law Clinic. He graduated with First Class Honours in Law (as Valedictorian) and First Class Honours (with the University Medal) in Finance from the University of Sydney. Prior to attending HLS, he worked at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer in Sydney and clerked for two justices of appeal in the New South Wales Court of Appeal. He has also spent time as an academic at the University of Sydney and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, including on topics in international law. In the summer of 2026 it is expected he will return to Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer.
