In early 2016, Francesco Romani became a PILAC Research Assistant on the Goals of War and War’s End project. In this capacity, he researches and analyzes legal—as well as factual and normative—dimensions of the end of armed conflict.
Francesco is a Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. candidate in International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) of Geneva. His doctoral dissertation aims to help clarify the law applicable to belligerent reprisals by providing an alternative account of their functioning and rationale. His main research fields are the laws of armed conflict/international humanitarian law, human rights law, State responsibility, use of force, and international criminal law. Previously, as a Research Assistant at Interpeace in Geneva, Francesco worked on peace-building issues.
Francesco holds a Law Degree from the University of Pavia, where he was affiliated with the Collegio Borromeo. He was also awarded the Diploma in Social Sciences from the Institute of Advanced Study (IUSS) in Pavia and the Certificat de Droit Transnational from the University of Geneva. He has been a Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg as well as at the University of Michigan Law School.
