Military Interventions in Internal Conflicts upon Invitation of the Government
A Talk by Dr. Chiara Redaelli, Visiting Research Fellow, Harvard Law School
When
March 11, 2019, from noon to 1:00 pm • lunch will be provided
Where
Lewis International Law Center, Room 214B
Summary
Over the past decades, several states have invoked governmental consent to justify their military interferences: foreign interventions in internal conflicts have turned into a common practice. At first sight, it seems that state practice has developed in a chaotic fashion, thus suggesting that politics, rather than law, governs foreign interventions. However, specific patterns emerge at a closer look. This talk will assess whether and under what circumstances interventions by invitation are lawful under the current legal framework. Specifically, it will identify new trends that emerged over the last decades and will assess whether they have become part of international law.
