**The application deadline for all students for Summer 2015 is Monday, April 20, 2015 at 11:59 a.m. EDT (Boston).**

The Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (PILAC) is seeking to hire a full-time summer intern. Exposed to some of the foremost challenges in the changing contemporary strategic environment, the PILAC summer intern will gain valuable experience performing high-level international law and policy research.

About the Program

PILAC’s objective is to explore and understand contemporary challenges concerning armed conflict through the lens of international law. Its mode is critical, independent, and rigorous. Its methodology fuses traditional public international law research, creative engagement with the ever-growing range of actors influencing contemporary battlefields, and targeted analysis on changing security environments. The Program does not engage in advocacy. While its contributors may express a range of views on contentious legal and policy debates, PILAC does not take institutional positions on these matters. With a focus on depth over breadth, the Program reaffirms the centrality of international law in regulating war-fighting, in diminishing the harmful effects of armed conflict, and in protecting civilians.

Projects

The PILAC summer intern will likely work on a range of projects, such as:

Time Commitment

  • This PILAC summer internship is full-time (35 hours per week) for 10 weeks.
  • The summer internship will run from June 1 through August 7 or from June 8 through August 14.

Eligibility

  • Internships are open to students who have successfully completed at least one international law course and who are enrolled in a law-degree program.
  • Students at different levels of study (e.g., LL.B., J.D., LL.M., M.Phil., D.Phil., Ph.D., or S.J.D.) are welcome to apply.
  • The summer intern does not need an existing affiliation with Harvard University.
  • The summer intern must be available to begin working on June 1 or June 8.
  • The summer intern does not need to be a U.S. resident or in school in the U.S.; we encourage international students as well as U.S. students to apply. Please note, however, that any internship offer will be conditional on, among other things, the student being able to demonstrate employment authorization in the U.S. and/or suitable immigration sponsorship. PILAC will work with the Harvard International Office (HIO) to try to sponsor a J-1 Student Intern Visa for a summer intern who meets the requirements. More information can be found on the HIO website at http://hio.harvard.edu/j-student-intern-visa. International students studying at a U.S. institution who may qualify for CPT or OPT should be in touch with the relevant administrative office responsible for handling CPT and OPT employment considerations at their home institution.

Selectivity

  • We anticipate receiving a large number of applications, and unfortunately we can hire only one summer intern in 2015.
  • We strongly recommend that interested candidates explore and pursue as many potential opportunities in international law and armed conflict as possible.

Payment

  • The PILAC summer intern will be paid $12.50 an hour.
  • Please note that the remuneration may not be sufficient to cover living expenses in the Boston/Cambridge area.
  • Students who need to apply for certain visas will need to be able to demonstrate sufficient external funding.
  • No other benefits are provided, and interns must make their own housing, insurance, and transportation arrangements.
  • The intern will need to provide his or her own computer.

Commitment to Diversity

  • We actively seek and welcome applications from people of color, women, the LGBTQIA community, people with military experience, and persons with disabilities, as well as applications from students across the spectrum of training in international law related to armed conflict.
