The Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (HLS PILAC) is seeking Research Assistants for the 2019–2020 academic year.

Building on their experience at the Program, HLS PILAC Research Assistants have gone on to a range of careers involving international law, including as legal advisers to governments (including militaries), international organizations, and NGOs; as judicial clerks; as academics; and as advocates. In just the last year, HLS PILAC RAs have, among other things:

  • Had their work cited by the International Law Commission’s Special Rapporteur on protection of the environment in relation to armed conflict;

  • Contributed to a first-of-its-kind catalogue of self-defense reports;

  • Supported a workshop co-hosted by HLS PILAC, the ICRC, and the Stockton Center for International Law on artificial intelligence and armed conflict;

  • Assisted the academic work of faculty and staff; and

  • Participated in a research engagement in Moscow on legal dimensions of artificial intelligence in military affairs.

Depending on the project or initiative, some of the tasks that RAs may be called on to do — whether individually or on a team — include the following:

  • Perform primary- and secondary-source research and analysis;

  • Prepare briefing materials and presentations;

  • Write legal research memoranda;

  • Present research and analysis;

  • Research, draft, and edit publications, including analytical reports, catalogues of practice, and bibliographies.

In general, the Program seeks a commitment of 5 to 10 hours per week (on average), for at least one semester. Positions are remunerated at the hourly HLS RA rate.

For this call for applications, only current HLS students who are 2L or 3L J.D. candidates, LL.M. candidates, or S.J.D. candidates are invited to fill out the form below and thereby submit an application. We note that we anticipate receiving more applications than available positions.

Eligible students may submit an application through the following form by September 4th. Please note that we anticipate that decisions will be made by September 12th.
