Background
On May 31 (Friday), the PIR Center and the Institute of Contemporary International Studies of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation will organize a seminar as part of the Midweek Brainstorming Sessions series on Autonomy in Military Affairs — International Legal Aspects.
The field of AI-related technologies is progressing fast and major states’ militaries have demonstrated their interest in investing into a broad range of systems that operate with different degrees of autonomy. On the international level, there is a lack of consensus between states — as well as between researchers — regarding whether and how lethal autonomous weapon systems should be regulated and what principles should apply to them.
These and other issues will be addressed by the speakers:
Dustin Lewis, Senior Researcher, Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict
Vadim Kozyulin, Project Director, Emerging Technologies and Global Security Project, PIR Center
The main issues of the seminar will include:
Capabilities and threats of autonomous weapons;
The use of autonomous weapons in the context of international law;
The analysis of the discussion on humanitarian aspects of the use of autonomous weapons.
We invite you to take part in the seminar on Friday, May 31, at 15:00 – 17:00 at the Institute of Contemporary International Studies of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation at Bolshoy Kozlovskiy Pereulok, 4, bld 1 (room 4).
The working language of the seminar is English (speakers will speak in English; participants can make comments and questions in both Russian and English).
