Summary

The East Asia Summit (EAS) is a forum held annually for dialogue and cooperation on key challenges facing the East Asian region. The EAS works to advance closer regional integration and cooperation. The EAS strives to further enhance cooperation to counter terrorism and its financing. The East Asia Summit meets to engage in constructive discussion and cooperation on counterterrorism activities among its members. At the 9th East Asia Summit in November 2014, the EAS condemned the violence and intolerance of the Islamic State and denounced all acts of terrorism. The EAS reaffirmed its commitment to preventing and suppressing the financing and facilitation of foreign terrorist fighters, consistent with international law. The EAS also underlined the need to engage in a comprehensive response to terrorism by identifying the underlying factors that support terrorism and lead to radicalization.

Participants at the East Asia Summit have included Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United States, and Russia.
